Vintage kilim rug handwoven in the second half of the 20th century in Tavas which is a town of Denizli in the Aegean region of Turkey.

This rug showcases a dynamic composition of repeating geometric hexagons and diamond shapes, each woven with a distinct palette of muted earth tones mixed with soft pastels. The pattern is characterized by sharp jagged edges framing the diamonds, which are filled with smaller internal motifs resembling stylized eyes, arrows, and protective talismans. The overall effect invites the viewer to explore a rich tapestry of ancient symbolism interwoven with contemporary aesthetics.

The motifs within this kilim hold profound meanings rooted in Anatolian tradition:

  • Hexagons and Diamonds: These shapes symbolize protection and eternity, representing the weaver’s hope to safeguard household and loved ones from harm.
  • Eye-like Patterns: Often referred to as the "evil eye" motif, this symbol is believed to ward off negative energy and envy, a timeless emblem of spiritual defense.
  • Arrow Shapes: Arrows denote direction, movement, and progress, reflecting the constant drive toward growth and new horizons in life.
  • Layered Color Use: The mix of muted browns, pinks, greens, and oranges evoke the natural landscape, emphasizing balance and harmony with the environment, as well as resilience through changing seasons.

Through this intricate interplay of symbols, the rug tells a story about the hopes, challenges, and protection woven into daily life by the artisan’s hand. For a deeper dive into these fascinating motifs, see our Kilim motifs and symbols page.

When integrating this rug into various interior design styles, its versatility becomes clear:

  • Bohemian: The rustic, tribal vibe enhances eclectic spaces rich with texture, plants, and layered textiles, adding an authentic cultural touch.
  • Scandinavian: Despite the rug’s vibrant pattern, the muted color scheme pairs beautifully with minimalist, light-filled interiors, adding warmth and grounding the space without overwhelming it.
  • Mid-Century Modern: The geometric shapes echo the clean lines and shapes favored in mid-century design, making it a statement piece that adds both comfort and visual interest.
  • Eclectic Contemporary: In spaces that celebrate personality and curiosity, this kilim’s genuine handcrafted charm complements varied furnishings and unexpected décor choices.
  • Rustic Farmhouse: Earthy tones combined with timeless symbolism enrich rustic wooden floors and vintage furniture, fostering a feeling of heritage and connectedness.

Whether used as a focal point in a living room or a layered accent in a bedroom, this kilim brings narrative and soul to any room. It merges function with storytelling, offering a tactile link to Anatolian traditions while fitting comfortably into today's diverse design sensibilities.

We received our patchwork Kilim and are very happy with it. Thank you Ida for all your help & suggestions in choosing this custom rug. I can truly say I have never had better service for any company - EVER! My emails were answered daily with such patience. And it was exciting to watch the delivery process through UPS global, as the rug traveled from Istanbul to California.Your gift was very much appreciated. AAAAA!!!

The kilims are very high quality and gorgeous. We are doing some remodeling in our house and faux painting the walls using reds and golds and the colors in the kilims match perfectly. I took one of them to my office one day and now everyone wants one or two! Thanks so much for helping me with the colors. The folks at Kilim.com are not only very professional, but friendly as well. You may be hearing from me again soon.

The kilim arrived yesterday and created a lot of excitement in the office. I followed your instructions and attached the kilim to a dowel rod with about 12 hoops of ribbon and hung it in my office this morning, and everyone thinks it's a beautiful addition to the office and a terrific conversation-starter. Your website and your service both exceeded my expectations, and I would be hard-pressed to think of any constructive criticism. I certainly passed your URL around the office and assured everyone that your stock was infinitely more varied than the two or three rug shops I visited in Boston and your prices more competitive. My French colleague who travels in the Middle East confirmed for everyone that one would have to travel to Turkey oneself to find a selection and price range better than yours. I think you have a very good business model.

I received the rug today, it’s beautiful. And thank you for the evil eye amulet. I recall very fondly the hospitality of the people in Turkey when I visited Izmit with President Clinton in 1999 after the earthquake. I’m very glad to have this piece in my home to remind me of their warmth and resilience.

I received the kilim last night, and spent hours gazing it. Sorry for not contacting immediately, I just couldn’t leave from the kilim. It is more than my expectation, which is also expected. What a kilim! Deep and tender colors, lively design and fine weaving. I am so happy and don’t know how to express my gratitude. Your correspondence was very neat and prompt, which gave me no worrying about purchasing the kilim without looking the real. Thank you very much for your kindness and wonderful kilim! Dealing with Kilim.com was my great pleasure, and I would like to do it again soon.
