Understanding Visible Weaving Details

Many traditional hand-knotted rugs are intentionally trimmed to a lower pile to create a softer, more contemporary appearance. When the pile is reduced in this way, some of the rug’s original weaving details may become more visible on the surface.

What Are These Details?

In some hand-knotted rugs, especially when more than one weaver works on the same piece, the weft threads are secured at certain points before the weaving direction changes or the next section continues.

These are not later repairs or restoration marks. They are part of the rug’s original weaving structure and construction.

Why Do They Become More Noticeable?

These details are usually hidden beneath the pile. When the pile is trimmed lower, they can become visible as vertical zigzag lines, diagonal lines, or subtle linear details on the surface, such as in the examples below.
