Vintage jijim rug hand-woven in the second half of the 20th century in Turkey. Jijim is a Turkish word for a kilim made using the supplementary weft technique.

Design Elements

  • Jijim Technique: The jijim weaving technique involves creating narrow strips of fabric that are later sewn together, producing a textured and visually appealing rug.
  • Geometric Patterns: The rug features a variety of geometric motifs which are commonly found in traditional kilim designs. These motifs symbolize elements of nature and life.
  • Color Palette:
    • Rich Reds: Represent warmth, passion, and energy.
    • Greens: Symbolize fertility, nature, and abundance.
    • Yellows and Oranges: Convey joy, happiness, and the sun’s vitality.
    • Earthy Tones: These colors ground the design, representing stability and connection to the earth.
  • Diamond Motifs: The repeated diamond shape symbolizes protection and is often linked to the eye of God or spiritual safeguarding.

Meanings of Main Motifs

  • Fertility and Harvest: Certain patterns represent agricultural themes, symbolizing the hope for abundance and good harvests.
  • Life and Renewal: Patterns resembling water and waves signify life, refreshment, and vitality, essential components of culture and sustenance.
  • Life Journey: Winding lines and paths symbolize human life journeys, representing the struggles and triumphs faced along the way.
  • Protection: Geometric shapes act as talismans, providing spiritual protection to the household.

Summary

The vintage Anatolian kilim rug woven with the jijim technique showcases a vibrant array of colors including reds, greens, and yellows, each carrying its own significance. The geometric motifs, particularly the diamond shapes, symbolize protection and spiritual safeguarding, while other patterns reference fertility and the life cycle. This rug is more than just a decorative piece; it embodies the cultural heritage and beliefs of its weavers, connecting them to nature and their histories.

Colors may appear slightly different across various monitors due to screen settings device differences, and external lighting conditions.
