Vintage jijim rug hand-woven in the second half of the 20th century in Turkey. Jijim is a Turkish word for a kilim made using the supplementary weft technique.

Design Elements

  • Pattern: The rug features a repeating diamond motif, which is central to its design. The diamond shape is framed by double borders adorned with geometric patterns, giving it a structured and dynamic appearance.
  • Motifs: The presence of zigzag and spiral patterns within the diamonds signifies the flow of energy and life. The inner diamond showcases additional smaller motifs, revealing layers of meaning and complexity.
  • Borders: The rug is bordered by intricate and vibrant designs, emphasizing the craftsmanship involved in the jijim technique, which highlights the beauty of simplicity and juxtaposition.

Colors

  • Background Color: Deep maroon serves as the background, creating a rich and warm foundation that contrasts with the vivid colors of the motifs.
  • Accent Colors:
    • Blue: Represents stability and tranquility, often linked to protection and safety.
    • Yellow: Symbolizes warmth, joy, and the sun, bringing an element of brightness to the design.
    • Earthy Tones: These colors ground the rug and connect it to nature, evoking a sense of harmony and balance.

Main Motifs and Their Meaning

  • Diamond Motif: This is the central motif, symbolizing protection and prosperity. Diamonds are associated with the earth’s fertility and abundance.
  • Zigzag Patterns: They represent the journey of life, conveying movement, energy, and the ups and downs inherent in a person's life path.
  • Spiral Motifs: Spirals signify growth, evolution, and the cyclical nature of life. The pattern illustrates the interconnectedness of all things.
  • Geometric Borders: These intricate designs symbolize unity and continuity. They enhance the overall aesthetic while signifying the importance of community and family in the weaver’s culture.

Summary

The vintage Anatolian kilim rug woven with the jijim technique showcases a rich array of colors and patterns that convey deep cultural meanings. Dominated by a central diamond motif and surrounded by intricate borders, the rug is both visually striking and symbolically significant. Its use of color not only enhances its design but also imbues it with emotional and spiritual resonance, reflecting themes of protection, life’s journey, growth, and community. This kilim is not just a piece of decor but a woven narrative of tradition and culture.

Colors may appear slightly different across various monitors due to screen settings device differences, and external lighting conditions.
