This is a 'perde' meaning curtain from Malatya, Turkey. It was handwoven in the 60s and it is in very good condition. These unique weavings were made by sewing together several flatweaves of 3-5 different colors for use as drapes, tent doors, bedspreads or for other applications where relatively large areas are to be decorated. You may accent your room with this timeless flatweave as a sofa cover, bed cover, drapery as well as a rug on the floor in a low/medium traffic area, best with a rug pad for more grip and comfort.

Design and Motifs of the Rug

This rug showcases a bold and straightforward design composed of wide vertical stripes in five distinct colors: a deep red on both edges, black, vibrant orange, and a fresh olive green. Each stripe smoothly transitions into the next without any complex patterns or obvious traditional motifs. The simplicity and focus on solid color fields create a visual rhythm, emphasizing the strength of natural dyes and traditional weaving methods.

The apparent absence of intricate motifs aligns this rug more with a functional and modern aesthetic within the realm of traditional kilims. Nonetheless, the colors themselves carry cultural and emotional symbolism deeply rooted in the weaving traditions of Anatolia:

  • Red: Symbolizes passion, vitality, and protection against evil. It reflects warmth and energy.
  • Black: Often represents fertility and the unknown beyond life, adding depth and contrast.
  • Orange: Suggests endurance, courage, and the vigor of life in many Anatolian weavings.
  • Green: Traditionally associated with nature, renewal, and abundance, bringing a sense of peace.

Even though this particular rug refrains from using explicit patterned motifs, its bold, expressive stripes convey a powerful narrative about balance, harmony, and the interdependence of these symbolic colors woven into a tightly structured composition. The simplicity embodies modern expressions of ancient weaver traditions, creating a bridge between past and present.

Integration with Interior Design Styles

This rug’s strong, colorful bands lend it remarkable adaptability across various interior design styles. How does it fit so seamlessly?

  • Modern and Minimalist Interiors: The crisp, clean lines and lack of complicated motifs enhance minimalist spaces by adding a bold touch without overwhelming simplicity. It acts as a striking focal point that complements uncluttered furniture and neutral palettes.
  • Eclectic Spaces: The vibrancy of the colors offers a grounding element amid an eclectic mix of patterns and cultural artifacts, connecting different styles through a shared appreciation for artisan craft.
  • Mid-Century Modern: The vintage feel of the rich hues and the strong, defined stripes resonate well with mid-century aesthetics that favor graphic elements and organic colors, evoking nostalgia.
  • Bohemian and Global-Inspired Decor: Its raw authenticity, natural dyes, and traditional weaving techniques enrich bohemian or globally influenced interiors, offering warmth and texture.
  • Industrial and Urban Lofts: Against the backdrop of exposed brick, concrete, or metal, this rug introduces warmth and a softer counterbalance with its earthy reds and greens.

The rug’s simplicity allows it to meld effortlessly with various textures and materials, from wooden floors to leather sofas. These broad vertical stripes also make a room appear taller, adding architectural interest and energy.

I had to write you and let you know that I just got back from my trip, and saw my package from you...........I was VERY anxious to open it, and I just can't tell you how absolutely PERFECT the rugs are! They are just fantastic! These rugs are going in a home in Colorado, and they are exactly what I had wanted. I just cannot believe I was able to find such wonderful, quality hand-woven kilims on a website.......sometimes you really don't know what you're ordering.......and it can be a very anxious time on waiting to receive what you HOPE you think you should be getting. Please let your weavers know they should be VERY proud of their work.......it is simply beautiful, and unlike any other I have seen. I cannot wait for my decorator to see the rugs......I know she will be very impressed! I truly enjoyed working with you, you were so helpful, and VERY dependable.........a MUCH added bonus in the computer-age!
