The most well known of all Kurdish kilims originate from Senna, now called Sanandaj, and its environs. Senna is the present capital of the Iranian Kurdistan and has been, since at least the Safavid era, a town with a sophisticated urban demand for workshop carpets and kilims. This is a typical Senna kilim with wool on cotton warps and cotton fringes. It has repeating floral patterns over the whole field. Senna kilims are usually in small in size, basically slit woven and the colors are predominantly blue, red and white. This fine piece was handwoven in the late 20th century.

Design and Motifs

This exquisite kilim features a complex central medallion pattern set against a rich burgundy background. The medallions are emphasized by alternating fields of cream and subtle gray, creating a dramatic contrast that draws the eye inward. Surrounding these central shapes are various smaller geometric motifs scattered across the field, each carefully woven in vibrant but earthy tones such as green, blue, yellow, and rust.

  • Central Medallion: Represents unity and protection, often symbolizing the heart of the home or a spiritual sanctuary.
  • Hook motifs: Seen throughout the field, these zigzag or "elibelinde" shapes convey feminine power and fertility, reflecting the weaver’s hopes for growth and abundance.
  • Ram’s horn shapes: Emblems of strength, heroism, and masculinity, binding the rug with a narrative of resilience and protection.
  • Eye motifs: Scattered in multiple places, these are signs warding off the evil eye, infusing the rug with a protective charm.
  • Bird and animal symbols: These often signify freedom, happiness, or vigilance, connecting the rug to daily life and nature.

The detailed borders filled with triangular patterns serve as a framing device that holds the story within, symbolizing boundaries that guard the inner sanctuary. For deeper symbolism and extraordinary meanings behind these traditional patterns, visit our Kilim motifs and symbols page.

Integration with Interior Design Styles

This versatile kilim fits beautifully into a variety of interior décor schemes, adding warmth and character:

  • Bohemian Style: The rich colors and intricate patterns complement the eclectic mixing of textures and vibrant accessories typical of boho interiors.
  • Modern Minimalist: This rug’s bold contrast and graphic nature bring life to sleek and simple spaces without overwhelming the clean lines.
  • Rustic and Farmhouse: The earthy tones and organic motifs enhance cozy, lived-in feels, anchoring wooden furniture and natural materials.
  • Traditional and Classic: The historic symbolism links well with antique furnishings and layered accessories, creating a grounded and meaningful space.
  • Eclectic: The patchwork feel of motifs scattered across the field provides a dynamic counterpoint to diverse materials and colors, fueling creative expression.

Wherever you place this kilim, it extends an invitation to linger, reflecting a narrative woven from centuries-old artistry and heartfelt storytelling.

Rolling Up

This kilim is a remarkable piece that blends intricate symbolism with vibrant artistry. Each motif reflects a deep cultural heritage, highlighting themes of protection, strength, fertility, and joy that resonate universally. Its bold color palette and detailed designs make it an adaptable piece for many interior styles—from modern minimalism to warm rustic homes or eclectic spaces seeking a compelling focal point. Exploring its motifs reveals a rich tapestry of meaning—woven with care and cultural pride—making it more than a floor covering but a storytelling element in any room.
