Vintage tulu rug hand-woven in the second half of the 20th century in Turkey. Tulu is basically a kilim or a plainweave with tufts of wool or goat-hair yarn interwoven using the Turkish knot to form tuft patterns on the underlying design. Tulu is the English pronunciation for the Turkish word, "tüylü" meaning hairy. The technique used for weaving is very similar to "gabbeh" in Iran, "Beni Ourain" rugs of Morrocco and "ryijy" in Finland. All have been produced for functional purposes rather than commercially and in mountainous regions, so they all have thick pile for protection against cold. Their weaving is more coarse so they can be woven faster at home that the sophisticated fine rugs that can only be woven from a pattern in workshops. They mostly had "primitive" designs and used undyed hand-spun wool or few colors.

Colors may appear slightly different across various monitors due to screen settings device differences, and external lighting conditions. If color accuracy is important for your space, we recommend viewing the rug on multiple devices or contacting us for a detailed color description. We can provide detailed photos and references using Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, Pantone, or even Crayola crayons.

I would like to say that I think your web site is excellent, and a model of good design and functionality. I was just in Istanbul (my second visit) where I bought four kilims and two carpets. I wish that I had discovered your business before my visit!

Absolutely love our new rug, colour and pattern exactly as shown, service has been brilliant, delivery super quick, very very pleased. I was worried about ordering online but shopping with kilim has been the best. Just wish I’d ordered 2 matching cushions at the same time. I would definitely recommend kilim. Thank You Kilim.

The kilim arrived today! And in great shape—no moisture issues. Plus, my family loves it—it’s “soooooo me,” they say! So thank you so very much for your cooperation and fine help all the way through. I wish we could do it again very soon, but I will have to control myself for a while!
