Vintage tulu rug hand-woven in the second half of the 20th century in Turkey. Tulu is basically a kilim or a plainweave with tufts of wool or goat-hair yarn interwoven using the Turkish knot to form tuft patterns on the underlying design. Tulu is the English pronunciation for the Turkish word, "tüylü" meaning hairy. The technique used for weaving is very similar to "gabbeh" in Iran, "Beni Ourain" rugs of Morrocco and "ryijy" in Finland. All have been produced for functional purposes rather than commercially and in mountainous regions, so they all have thick pile for protection against cold.

Their weaving is more coarse so they can be woven faster at home that the sophisticated fine rugs that can only be woven from a pattern in workshops. They mostly had "primitive" designs and used undyed hand-spun wool or few colors.

I highly recommend this company for the quality of their rugs and for their amazing customer service. I ordered a rug and in the process of it being shipped we were mandatorily evacuated because of hurricane Michael. I envisioned my beautiful rug sitting on our porch getting ruined while we were away. I emailed Kilim and requested they delay shipment and received an immediate response that they would deliver at a later date. We received the rug after the evacuation order ended and we had returned home. It is more beautiful than the pictures online. I was hesitant to purchase a rug from pictures on line. The colors within the rug were critical to me. Kilim.com upon my request for more color info, took additional pictures with crayons and paint swatches sitting on the carpet. That solidified my choice. The rug arrived quickly and the way it was folded and shipped left the rug without marks when placed on the floor. I wasn’t expecting it to be of the quality of my parents’ thick antique Persian rug and it wasn’t . For the price, I’m pleased with this vintage rug. It has more class and personality than a machine made rug you can find at a big box store.
