Feraghan is a region in Central Iran best known for its room-sized carpets many of which are almost square format. They were highly fashionable in nineteenth century and were regarded as among the finest Persian rugs to be woven in the nineteenth century. The all over Herati pattern is the most common Feraghan which is usually ‘fish heads’ or leaves woven around a well-defined diamond and at the same time these motifs curl around a rosette. This pile rug is a typical Feraghan carpet complete with Herati field and leaf border woven in mid twentieth century. The ivory field is also a characteristic. This piece is partly woven with vegetable dyed wool and is around 60 years old.
