Given below are the categories into which we have
divided the kilims you will find in the Kilim.com
store. Please note that the criteria we have used
to assign items to their various categories follow
generally accepted practice, although there certainly
are other equally acceptable methods of classification.

|
New Kayseri Kilim
|
|
Classified as new by definition, because
of their recent production, all kilim rugs
in this category presented on Kilim.com are
nevertheless still unique since each one is
individually hand-woven and because
of this bears all the marks of the particular
weaver's art that cannot be repeated twice
in exactly the same way. Some weavers of new
kilim rugs still use wool dyed with natural
dyes, while others may use yarn colored with
synthetic dyes.
All kilim rugs presented on Kilim.com are
woven with wool dyed with dyes whose quality
has passed prolonged tests so that only very
rarely would there be a slight possibility
for these colors to run or develop any other
undesired effects.

New
Designs |
|
New kilim rugs with contemporary desings
for those favoring 'minimalist' approaches.
Some of these designs are the modernized versions
of traditional kilim patterns, while others
are wholly new creations.
|
|
Vegetable-dyed
New Kilim Rugs |
|
These highest quality new kilim rugs are
woven with vegetable dyed wool. These kilims
are made with motifs that incorporate elements
of traditional designs and modern inspirations.
They are the products of intense labor and
craftsmanship. Many different natural dyestuffs
such as walnut, madder root and chamomile
are consumed in order to get a spectrum of
colors which are brilliantly harmonized. When
exposed to sun light over a long period of
time vegetable dyed kilim rugs fade or mellow
leaving lighter tones that are just as beautiful
as the original color.

Antique
Kilim Rugs |
|
Kilim rugs older than 80-100 years are classified
as antique.
At that time most kilim rugs were not made
for commercial purposes, but they were handmade
for personal use in accordance with regional
traditions and reflected the individual tastes
of the weavers. Each antique kilim rug is
a unique creation woven with hand-spun
wool colored with mostly natural dyes. Few
have survived intact, but those with some
damage can be repaired on order using wool
from another kilim rug woven in that same
period.

|
Semi-Antique
Kilim Rugs |
 |
 |
|
|
Konya Cicim
|
Kilim rugs in the semi-antique category are
those aged between 30 and 100 years. Like
the antique, the semi-antique kilim rugs were
also individually handmade following regional
traditions modified by the weaver's tastes
and were generally intended for own use. As
is the case with antique kilim rugs, damaged
places, if any, can be repaired on order using
materials from the same period.

Palaz
& Abas |
|
From the Persian word meaning "rag",
palaz is a plainweave in plain or diagonal
weaving decorated with supplementary weft
patterning known as jijim (cicim). This embellishment
can consist of signs specifying tribal allegiance,
stylized animal symbols or geometric motifs.
The background colors are primarily cream,
beige and brown.
|
|
Drapes
& Hangings |
|
These articles are made by sewing together,
horizontally or vertically, several weavings
of 4-5 different colors for use as drapes,
wall-hangings, bedspreads or for other applications
where relatively large areas are to be decorated.

|
Tulus |
 |
 |
|
|
Flikli Tulu
|
Tulu is basically a kilim rug or a plainweave with
tufts of wool or goat-hair (mohair) interwoven
using the Turkish knot to form tuft patterns on
the underlying design which may also be ornamented
with supplementary weft patterning called jijim
(cicim). In another version of the tulu, the tufts
are dense, resulting in a cuddly, shaggy rug surface.

Pillows |
|
These lovely coverings for pillows and cushions
are one-off items since they are mostly made from
parts of unique old kilim rugs.
